11/17/1966 | "Sam Yorty Decries Teen Disturbances" | Eagle Rock Sentinel | Sam Yorty, Los Angeles’s mayor, defends his recent curfew ordinance change to allow arrests of kids under 18 for being out past 10:00 P.M. During his press conference, Yorty decried a leaflet passed out by owners of the “Fifth Estate,” a Sunset Strip club located at 8226 Sunset Boulevard. This leaflet called for a protest against “disrespect and abuse of youths by police” in front of Pandora’s Box, another Strip nightclub located at 8118 Sunset Boulevard. |
11/20/1966 | "Huge Officer Force Breaks Up Crowd in Strip Showdown" | Los Angeles Times | A showdown between more than 1,000 young demonstrators and spectators and the largest force of police and deputy sheriffs since the start of protests against “police mistreatment of youths” takes place in front of Pandora’s Box at 8118 Sunset Boulevard. While one protestor stated that youth were “demanding equality,” the Los Angeles Times characterizes the protest as reaching “riot proportions with an estimated 1,000 persons running wild on the boulevard for two hours.” |
