1/14/1970"Signs of the Sunset"Los Angeles TimesNew billboards make Sunset Strip Los Angeles’s “own Times Square.” John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s billboard located near the Chateau Marmont (8221 Sunset Boulevard) reads, “WAR IS OVER! If you want it.” More changes are also happening, such as the former motel The Golden Crest (8300 Sunset Boulevard) turning into a retirement home, Scientology moving into Angels Corner Liquor store (8863 Sunset Boulevard), and new nightclub Sister George (9105 Sunset Boulevard) opening. The advertisements “have become more important than the attractions.”
9/14/1986"Tales of the Chateau"Los Angeles TimesThe famed Chateau Marmont located at 8221 Sunset has a lengthy history and list of Hollywood clientele. As Sunset Boulevard evolved from the place to be for Hollywood people in the 1930s to scattered businesses in the 1950s to the site of rock’n’roll clubs and riots in the 1960s and to the place of big rock tours in the 1970s, Chateau Marmont lasted all the while. From the top floor of the Chateau Marmont, in the 1980s, “Sunset Strip didn’t look to be such an old dog of a street anymore.”
10/3/1995"New Look for Sunset Strip"Los Angeles TimesWest Hollywood’s “Sunset Specific Plan” will revitalize Sunset Boulevard by attracting entertainment businesses with zoning changes. This plan would allow developers to build higher/denser than normally allowed in exchange for setting aside land for plazas and terraces. Though successful places like House of Blues (8430 Sunset Boulevard) were part of Sunset’s recent “modest boom,” there has been a loss of “key businesses” such as Playboy Enterprises (8560 Sunset Boulevard) and Warner Chappell Music, Inc. (9000 Sunset Boulevard). The large tax revenue Sunset could provide to West Hollywood would allow the city to continue to fund its social service programs (like housing for AIDS patients or a Russian immigrant community center). The city wanted to “preserve an asset that has international significance.”
8/3/2003"HOTELES CON ESTILO [= STYLISH HOTELS]"La OpiniónThe Chateau Marmont (8221 Sunset) is one of the legendary hotels on the Sunset Strip.
