6/8/1990 | "Rock City" | Los Angeles Times | Hard rock fans and musicians on the Strip have developed a “distinctive community, complete with its own dialect, attire, attitudes, rock star accessory marts, guitar and drum supermarkets, [and] nightclubs.” Frequented nightclubs include Gazzarri’s at 9039 Sunset Boulevard, the Roxy at 9009 Sunset Boulevard, the Rainbow at 9015 Sunset Boulevard, and Whiskey A Go Go at 8901 Sunset Boulevard. |
4/23/1994 | "Una 'tocada inolvidable' en el legendario bulevar Sunset [= An 'Unforgettable Gig' on Legendary Sunset Boulevard]" | La Opinión | At Whisky A Go Go (8901 Sunset Boulevard), "Tijuana NO", "María Fatal", "Los Olvidados", and "Motita" perform "legendary" musical sets. |
10/3/1995 | "New Look for Sunset Strip" | Los Angeles Times | West Hollywood’s “Sunset Specific Plan” will revitalize Sunset Boulevard by attracting entertainment businesses with zoning changes. This plan would allow developers to build higher/denser than normally allowed in exchange for setting aside land for plazas and terraces. Though successful places like House of Blues (8430 Sunset Boulevard) were part of Sunset’s recent “modest boom,” there has been a loss of “key businesses” such as Playboy Enterprises (8560 Sunset Boulevard) and Warner Chappell Music, Inc. (9000 Sunset Boulevard). The large tax revenue Sunset could provide to West Hollywood would allow the city to continue to fund its social service programs (like housing for AIDS patients or a Russian immigrant community center). The city wanted to “preserve an asset that has international significance.” |
