8/8/1991"Residents Seek to Block Retail Project"Los Angeles TimesA group of West Hollywood residents, Residents Organized Against Raleigh, prepares to mount a legal challenge against Raleigh Enterprises’s plans for commercial development on Sunset Boulevard and Alta Loma Road. Raleigh Enterprises had previously worked with Playboy Enterprises to develop the Playboy corporate office and club located at 8560 Sunset Boulevard. The group says the project will bring more traffic to their neighborhoods, but city traffic manager Lucy Dyke said, “There are going to be problems whether or not there is development on Sunset.”
10/3/1995"New Look for Sunset Strip"Los Angeles TimesWest Hollywood’s “Sunset Specific Plan” will revitalize Sunset Boulevard by attracting entertainment businesses with zoning changes. This plan would allow developers to build higher/denser than normally allowed in exchange for setting aside land for plazas and terraces. Though successful places like House of Blues (8430 Sunset Boulevard) were part of Sunset’s recent “modest boom,” there has been a loss of “key businesses” such as Playboy Enterprises (8560 Sunset Boulevard) and Warner Chappell Music, Inc. (9000 Sunset Boulevard). The large tax revenue Sunset could provide to West Hollywood would allow the city to continue to fund its social service programs (like housing for AIDS patients or a Russian immigrant community center). The city wanted to “preserve an asset that has international significance.”
1/9/1999"Developer Buys Sunset Strip Project Site"Los Angeles TimesThe builders of the proposed Sunset Millenium development purchase part of the area in their plan, including the old Playboy office building at 8560 Sunset and additional offices at 8490 Sunset. The plans include a shopping center, luxury hotel, and renovations of the currently disused office space. This is one of the first official development sites tied to the Sunset Specific Plan and has garnered significant backlash from the public.
